Rants / Re: Surface Resolution!
« on: August 10, 2007, 12:39:52 AM »
Yea, unfortunately computer graphics is all about trade-offs. It's really hard to get sharp edges on the holes, it's pretty technical to explain why though. One way to improve the result is to go to "View->Polygonizer Control" and change the polygonizer to "Extended Marching Cubes". This will help sometimes. Unfortunately in v002 the only real alternative is to up the mesh resolution.

I have implemented a better solution, which subdivides the mesh as necessary to get a good approximation. My plan is to have this happen automatically during "idle time", so you shouldn't need to manually tweak the mesh resolution very often. Maybe I'll post a few screenshots on the devblog...

Bugs / Re: Delete sometimes not working

You can clear your scribble marks with the red "cancel" icon that appears at the bottom of the screen after you sketch anything.

As for the scribble, yea, sorry, the detection is not awesome yet. I find it works best to basically try to scribble back and forth along a straight line. I'll try to improve it!

(By the way, "File->New" doesn't do anything)

Wish List / Re: Linux Port!
« on: August 10, 2007, 12:25:03 AM »
I'd love to have a Linux port too, but it would be a lot of work. ShapeShop is currently built on MFC - yes, ick - but replacing that with some other UI library like GTK or QT does not really appeal to me. I am planning on replacing the MFC UI with a custom OpenGL interface library (another research project...). At that point, it will be relatively simple to port to Linux, OS X, etc. But it's going to be a while...

(we can agree to disagree about the "kludge OS" statement...)

Because ShapeShop is a big part of my PhD research, it is basically an unstable mess until I decide to do a release, at which point I disable all the development code and ship what is working. This won't work for a developer group larger than, well, "me". So any open source thing would have to be a fork from my research version, which would inevitably diverge, making it near-impossible for me to integrate my research code back in. So, at least until I finish my PhD, open-sourcing ShapeShop would actually make my life a lot more difficult =\
